Denim Jackets & Movie Trailers

I don’t like to watch movie trailers.
My approach is generally to watch as little as possible in order to judge the film, shutting it off the moment I can percieve in myself the slightest desire to watch the movie.
A trailer turns you into the boring time traveler or prophecy believer in a movie.

Oh, I don’t need to worry, this isn’t how I die.

I watched First Cow tonight. An excellent film. There was a scene in the trailer where a gentleman is shown to be ignorant of some thievery going on in the background. While that character remained ignorant, the main characters were safe. So as long as that bit of dialogue from the trailer hadn’t appeared, I knew we were safe from conflict. This obviously saps a great deal of tension from the film, and it’s a drag.
Ignorance is great, and I recommend it.

I’m not sure how this is connected to the difference in my opinions on this blog and off of it, but it is. I was discussing the denim-jacket double-post with Abby’s Uncle and he seemed minorly offended by the fact that I critiqued a jacket he nearly bought. The Tellason Coverall Jacket:

this one.
Really what I said is it’s fantastic but it’s too long and the big pocket on the left side is a little silly. It is, and at 16.5oz. having 35oz. of denim across the better part of your left side is just kind of too much. It got me thinking about why I don’t like that jacket and why this blog is an imperfect format for expressing opinions.

I like a piece of clothing that does something a little boring so well that it stops being boring. I want a simple piece of clothing that has existed for decades executed with a level of craftsmanship and passion so ascendant that it becomes literally fascinating. That was my goal with the denim jacket I bought. The Tellason ain’t it.

It’s a great coat, but it’s trying to say something. It’s a conversation starter, it’s got an opinion. It’s not quiet. It’s cool, but it’s the kind of cool that values your thinking it’s cool, too.

This blog is imperfect because I won’t remember a single word of it tomorrow and if Abby asked me how I felt about the Tellason Coverall jacket over my morning coffee I’d likely have a slightly different read on things. That isn’t to say blogs are an imperfect medium so much as they’re imperfect for my brain, which is made of goop.

I think that jacket’s great. Tom’s taller than I am and I think it’d look better on him than it would me.
And besides, if we all liked the same thing it’d be a boring world anyways.
