I did not take many pictures today, nor did I do a great deal of thinking. Mostly I made a shelf, a really large one, half-circled above a window.

I designed it in sketchup, and augmented my reality a bit to get a sense of things. It turned out a bit different for the reasons things turn out different in the real world. No studs in the right places, glue not drying properly in the freezing cold, which my shop is,
the usual.

Making a place comfortable has long and short bits. Hanging art, painting walls, laying carpets. Then there’s the accruing of stories and little things.

I visited a friend, years ago, and each little thing, every jar full of rice or beans, every bowl for apples or onions was made by him or a friend. Each scoop was specific to its use, made for its hook, every thing was a story and I thought that was nice.

It can be hard to accept that these things take time, and that I’ve got some, if I’m lucky.
