Ain’t Gotta Go Fast

Almost immediately after writing that post I learned that we’re not meant to fast in remembrance of the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican. That’s the one about one man, the Pharisee, celebrating himself for fasting twice a week and tithing and what not, while a lowly Publican, a tax collector and a thief, mutters what would eventually become the Jesus Prayer. The Publican is to be lauded and loved by God. So we oughta be like him, so we don’t fast this week, and when we do fast again, we ought not do it with pride and showoffishness.

Anyways it’s good that I’m not fasting because I’m a bit under the weather. I went to bed with a cold and I woke up with a cold that was slightly worse. I’m hoping I’ll be better tomorrow.

I wonder, are you encouraged to not fast when you’re sick? Nursing mothers and pregnant women aren’t mean to, but they’re tougher than sick men by a lot.
