New Big Books

Getting obsessed with a book or, better yet, a series of books is one of life’s great pleasures. I reread a very cheesy, hardboiled sci fi novel I read in college recently. It was great. Since I read it in college a number of other books have come out in that series. I bought them all. They were cheap because they’re pulp paperback sci fi from a setting designed for tabletop miniatures.
886 + 714 + 429 + 381 = 2,410 pages of raucuous sci fi to read before bed. That should last me a little while. Then I can use it as pulp to make more paper, write letters on it or something.
I do wonder, as I’ve mused in a previous post, will it make me think and write like a pulp sci fi author? Would that be such a bad thing?
I guess it might be, I do write for a living, after all.
It would be pretty funny for an edge of Dan Abnett to find its way into a brand statement or something like that.

The media we consume, and the way we spend our time more generally has a monumental impact on us. That seems obvious, but it doesn’t change the fact that people, myself included, do almost nothing with this information.

It’s not as though I’m watching Liveleak videos all day and listening to Andrew Tate to rot my brain, but I’m also not reading the classics, classical music, and the sound of wind through the trees, either.

The existence of extremes can make it difficult to make the right choice, in my experience.
