Write About...

Abby says I could write about Dune 2, or my family. Or I could connect dune 2 and her family, or I could write about the barn her dad’s been building. I asked her for ideas and that’s what she suggested.

I went to see dune today, I went alone to a very large IMAX theater in a Boston suburb. Sort of like an open air mall. It was very loud and spectacular.

The people were loud and wore tents and complained loudly with strange haircuts. Little fringes and a lot of fluff.

I got peanut M&Ms and was sat between two couples before I moved down to the very front row. Back towards the middle of the IMAX it just felt like a regular movie, I wanted it to feel overwhelming, and it did, once I moved.

I was so close that I had to slowly turn my head to read the subtitles, I highly recommend it.

It’s possible that I’m spoiled by good tee vee, or maybe ruined by it, but Dune felt pretty rushed.

Film, as a genre, doesn’t feel rushed to me. A story can be properly told in an hour or two, but when you try to adapt a grand novel into a film, even two of them, it feels kinda quick. I think I might’ve liked it more if it were a series with a movie at the end, or just a series. I love a series.

That being said I quite enjoyed it, the costume, the sound, the sets, all fantastic. The sound most of all.

Much of my life is quiet with Roby, punctuated by her laughter and our attempts to make her laugh, with naps on either side. The sheer violence of the IMAX felt totally alien in the context of my sleepy rural life. Just as it’s meant to be, I think.
