It’s fascinating how an idea comes into reality. I oscillate between feeling like they are the total product of some muse working through me, given time and room, and the result of the past three decades learning.
A bit of column A, a bit of column B, I suppose.
Stephen King describes it as a lot of the former, naming his muse an old chain smoker in a basement, and a lot of the latter, too, in the form of boundless labor.
Moving out here, to the place I hope to raise kids, and ultimately, to die, has really changed things. Projects have new weight. I know that, if I’m lucky, I’ll get to use them to their fullest. Because of that I take my time, I’ve got loads of it and I’d like to do it right.
I can take my time at the learning, too. If I’m gonna be here for a while, what’s the harm on building my skills over months and years?
