I think about this tree a fair bit.
It was real old and it kept my old house in shade, back in Burlington. It was a silver maple that must’ve been around for the better part of a century at least. It was planted back before people knew better. Silver maples grow fast and strong and brittle. They tear up sidewalks and drop branches onto cars. This one did that last bit to our roommate at least once, maybe twice. Vengeful as it was, it didn’t deserve to go the way it did.
They told us they’d have take it down in order to redo some utilities for a round about, then they told us they actually wouldn’t have to, then they woke me up with chainsaws.
It’s a big tree, best to get to it bright and early and wake up the whole neighborhood with the deathknell of something beautiful.
Now there’s a street light there.
