I’m not a fan of sanding, and I’ve got to do a whole lot of it. It’s likely that I’ll continue to have a lot of it to do forever and ever. I like things that can be sanded, like wood, and if they can be sanded, they probably should be sanded, at least a little bit.
Recently I was calculating how many square inches I can do of sashiko stitching per hour, about four. Maybe I oughta think on how many square feet of wood I can sand per hour, I suppose it depends. It took me about three hours to sand ten slats for the bottom section of the built in I’ve been working on for months now.
They’re 1 1/4” wide, 11/16” thick and around 7’ 6” long. Now, I’m only sanding fully the top side, though I do take a plane to the other three surfaces. From there I champfer every corner with a spoke shave, raise the grain with water, sand again, and oil them.
Let’s call the planed-sides half sanded. The champfering will will come out in the wash.

1.25” x 80” = 100” (that’s the side I fully sand and oil)
1.25” x 80” = 100”/2 = 50” (that’s the other side, which I sand only a little)
.6875” x 80 = 55”/2 = 27.5” x2 = 55” (those are the sides I just plane)
100 + 50 + 55 = 205” square inches / 12’ = 17 ish. 17/3 = 5.6’ x 10 ish.

So, 56’ square feet in three hours if I did my math right which I very well may not have. 56/3 = 18.6 sqft.

I think that sounds reasonable?
I have about thirty more to do, plus a few odds and ends, and to say nothing of installation. I pre-drill and use star head screws with an impact drive. If I went straight into the brass flatheads I intend to finish with, the heads would spin clean off in the cherry.

Ask me how I know.

I cannot even begin to estimate how expensive this thing would be if I comissioned it, or even if I had bought wood in a normal way. But plenty of life is like that, huh? What’d it cost to hire someone to be Abby’s best friend? That’s a stupid question.
