Abby looks good next to the bench, or sitting on it, in it? She looks good with that bench. Maybe I fell into so much cherry because it works so well with Abby’s complexion and choice of clothes.
That’s a good reason, I think.
Good enough anyways.
I’ve been working on this bench for months. Apart from the upholstery it’s very nearly done. I suspect the upholstery will remain lengths of mud cloth draped across bricks of foam for a while.
I don’t know how to sew like that, I don’t care to learn, and Abby’s too busy to learn herself.

The thing’s hard to photograph. I try explaining it to folks who haven’t been over, and that’s hard too. It’s got two uses from as many sides, maybe more, and you can only take pictures from one side at a time.
It’s a lot of vertical pieces, and horizontal too. Posts and beams and slats and flats. There’s a bit of plywood but it’s hidden beneath upholstery. The last part to be finished’s gonna be the shelves on the back side. That by this weekend, I expect.
I think it can be judged a success by the fact that I have a hard time imagining this space, and the lives lived in it, without it. What in the hell did we do before we had this thing? We certainly didn’t sit at the big table we had, beautiful as that was.
Now we sit here all the time, to work, eat, chat.
I wonder when the table will be done...
