Vacation’s not so bad, as it turns out.

It threatened to rain all day, Google said it would, but it didn’t. The only moment it was even gloomy was after lunch, when we wanted to be inside anyways. Right after that, soon as we wanted to go on a walk to th beach, the sun was shining.

This trip, and our life generally of late, has felt like answers to questions big and small, now and then and later.

We walked downtown Brunswick this morning and visited a few retail shops that made me uncomfortable. Something about the kitsch and the cheapness, the introduction of more crap into the world made me feel almost sick. We walked away from there and to a used book store.

The gentleman waiting by the entrance greeted us with such enthusiasm that it was infectious. The place was connected with a local library, he explained, it was run by volunteers like him and all the profits went back to the public library. He hoped we’d enjoy the four light-filled rooms.

We did.

Abby and I bought children’s books and John Le Carre novels, those were 1$ a piece. We got hardcover Harry Potter 1-5, we found the 6th last week for free on the porch of our own local book shop.

We got The Cat In The Hat, and a book about Spanish Galleons, the sort with loads of diminuitive illustrations, the kind that kids like the best.

After having a hard time looking at expensive new things I sat on the floor and looked up at racks of $0.50 paperback sci-fi novels with the enthusiasm of a kid before tee vee was invented.

We left our shoes in bushes by the entrance to little used trails.
We ate fried fish and read in a screened in porch.
The internet went out and we didn’t care.
We made brownies and they were good.
We picked beach roses.
