Lacking Thoughts

My brain feels empty as I sit to write the blog this evening. I’ve been trying to think less these days. Think less and feel more, do more, promise less, too, to myself and to anybody. As a writer, professional and not-so-professional, the realization that words have a hard limit to their ability to communicate truth, and that that limit is, in fact, quite low, has been challenging. But in a good way.

Beyond having a limit to how effectively we might communicate with words, I believe the stronger an attempt to use words to communicate truth, the less effective the result. It’s like oobleck, that non-neutonian fluid that gets hard when you hit it and liquid when you move slowly through it. The harder you push with words, the less sense you make.

Better to do than to think or to say.

The truth of a thing can only be understood across lengths of time. We convinces ourselves that shortcuts can be found in words, but cutting corners just adds more sides, as they say.

This is amongst my favorite meme-images. It really puts into stark relief the difficulty of attempting to map the complexity and elegance of the universe with human language.

I feel about navigating the world the way I do about dogs.
A dog doesn’t need to understand the internal combustion engine for it to be profitable for him to avoid a road. A dog doesn’t need to know where chocolate comes from to benefit from avoiding it.

I don’t need to have words in order to love. Or at least I’m trying to become that way.
