Lawn Mower Path

We have a few acres of pasture around our house. The old owners used to brush hog it every year but we don’t. We let it grow wild, about as wild as the photograph above. We mow paths through it, also like above. We mow the same paths that the previous owners did. There’s a great big sweeping curve along the tree line edge of the pasture, we follow that with a little dip in where we have a fire pit.

The fire pit used to be a teardrop shape, but I’ve decided to make it as perfectly circular as the turn radius of my riding mower will allow.

Last summer, while it was hottest, I added another little island of mow in the pasture. I put a blow up pool there for Abby and I to dip when we’re doing work, or in her case, were feeling particularly pregnant.

It was a very inconvenient island because I didn’t want the path to it to be visible from the house, so it was cut as a tributary path from an existing path. Instead we ended up cutting our own desire line through the pasture, and that wasn’t very kind on our feet or the pasture.

So this past weekend I cut a new trail. It slopes mildly and it called out to me from the desire lines of the existing path we tread.

The pool’s inflated again, but the path’s too prickly to comfortably walk, it might be by the end of summer, but I suppose that’s what crocs are for.
