Seeing something through, and staying calm while you do it is often rewarded. You don’t even need to stay all that calm, and not for the whole time either.

There was a pile of sawdust by our kitchen island a few weeks ago. We swept it up, then it was back again.

Termites.

This little touch of homeowner daydream hot on the heels of shelling out two thousand dollars for a new septic tank pump after our basement flooded with raw sewage was not fun.

We peeled away some plywood where we saw the larvae,

Then we peeled away more.

I thought we’d have to take apart the whole island, or end up with a skeleton of a kitchen. I was not feeling good about it.

By the time the oscillating saw came out I was feeling bad.
But we saw it through. We ripped off two layers of plywood, removed some drawers, pulled out some trim and in the end…

It actually looks better.

I’m not just saying that.

The shelves were too deep to reliably use, now they’re open and it feels lighter. We were rewarded for seeing it through, and I think that’s nice.

We burned the termites.
