I had AI reinterpret a photograph of my barn, the one at the top of yesterdays post. This version is much, much worse. Laughably worse. AI makes me laugh, either at how bad it often is, or nervously at how good it often is.
It’s a funny thing, and not always funny haha.

It’s not impossible that the comparison of these two images is all you really need to know about AI art and stable diffusion. Any valid opinion about the technology can be arrived at through close consideration of these two pictures.

After work today I spent some time cleaning my barn, this barn, in the opressive heat. I took apart more absolutely lunatic constructions. It wasn’t fun, but I look at that labor fondly. I can see how beautiful the space will be ultimately, and that beauty is an improvement to my home, the place where Abby lives, the place where our kid will live. That’s a good thing and I feel lucky to get to do it.

Once it’s cleaned up and full of light and my grandfather’s wine press I’ll make another portrait of the barn. I’ll do that because it’s a place I love and the image will have meaning and beauty because of that. AI has no meaning, it is from nowhere, no when, and for nobody.
