Coincidence?

“They don't really believe in coincidences. They've heard of them. They've just never seen one.”

That’s a great line from a really bad movie.

I myself do not really believe in coincidences. The universe bends towards irony, towards surprise and dramatic outcome. It’s good stories all the way down, even if the sort of story that’s abstract and perhaps a little tragic. Which is to say, it’s all part of the story, even if it doesn’t look like it. That’s just foreshadowing.

I was talking with a new friend at church last week, I was complaining about waiting, how delayed some things are. Buying land, waitings on lawyers, job interviews, everything just takes so goddamn long, and worse than that, longer than people promise. I don’t mind waiting, but what I hate is when people say it’ll be a certain amount of time, and it ends up being far, far longer. It’s just rude.

“Discourtesy is unspeakably ugly to me.”

That’s a great line from a great film.

Anyways, my friend pointed out that I have a lot of delayed things to complain about and I might want to reflect on why that is. Why it is I potentially attract that kind of discourtesy, or why it bothers me so much, or maybe both. I don’t have any answers. I’ve thought about it and I don’t have any answers, but I think I’m getting better at putting up with this particular kind of annoyance. So maybe that’s an answer.
