The two I got down today are:
1 .
Roby Vision - comparing David Roby’s stealing of cable television to Roby’s obsession with looking at windows.2 .
The difference in self-perception and self-making implied by a pair of “tutto passa” tattoos I saw on the internet on some old Italian men.Because this is obviously a Daddy blog I’ll write about the former.
Roby doesn’t have the attention span for screens just yet, it doesn’t seem like she even has the eyeballs for it, yet. She can see only contrast and lives mostly by smell, of milk, of mom, of me. The few things other than Abby’s face she likes to look at with any consistency are our windows, but not too close, and not when it’s too bright.
She stares up at them like she’s seeing the face of God, I suppose she very well may be. What is a window in the eyes of a two week old? Larger than anything, inconceivable, part of oneself and around oneself. Astonishing.
Roby-vision is a term coined by my father for the cable David Roby, Roby’s namesake, would steal from the corporations. These things are not necessarily connected, though I suppose I could make some comment on how television has become our newborn-looking-at-a-midday-window. Feels like a stretch.
