The Weight of Learning

Nobody’s perfect, eh? That’s something of a given. Sinners all. But somehow by living in ignorance the people we hold in our minds can be more perfect than they are in reality. Nothing has really changed, the sin they committed is still in the past, they’re still just as human as they were before, still as deserving of love and respect and dignity. The only thing that’s changed is that the pride of the knower has inflated a bit.

I used to think that knowing the bad thing a person did was sort of a gift, it meant you could do away with them in your mind and your heart. It had already happened, had always had happened, your knowing just allowed you to take action. Now, given this strange world view of mine, I know that my knowledge of the sin shouldn’t change my perspective or my behavior.

Assuming the worst behavior of a person, I should still treat them with love. Of course some people are dangerous, and particulary when that danger is most acute to my family and other people I’m responsible for, certain actions must be taken. So it’s not as though I’m suggesting badness and sin be treated as things we ought to ignore, certainly not.

But they shouldn’t get in the way of love.
Easier said than done.

The person in that image is not the sinner in question.
There is no sinner in question,
the royal sinner,
all of us.
