Realizing that all music and all art is about Jesus, wether the artist knows it or not, is liberating. The song that made me realize this is “Lovers Rock” by Sade.
I am in the wilderness
You are in the music
In the man's car next to me
Somewhere in my sadness
I know I won't fall apart completely
[Verse 2]
When I need to be rescued
And I need a place to swim
I have a rock to cling to in the storm
When no one can hear me calling
I have you, I can sing to
[Pre-Chorus]
And in all this
And in all my life
[Chorus]
You are the lovers rock
The rock that I cling to
You're the one
The one I swim to in a storm
Like a lovers rock
[Verse 3]
I am in the wilderness
You are in the music
In the man's car next to me
Somewhere in my sadness
I know I won't fall apart completely
And in all this
And in all my life
[Chorus]
You are the lovers rock
The rock that I cling to
You're the one
The one I swim to in a storm
Like a lovers rock
You are the lovers rock
The rock that I cling to
You're the one
The one I swim to in a storm
Like a lovers rock
[Bridge]
When I need to be rescued, you're there
When I need a place to swim to in a storm
I think of you
And all my life
And in all my life
[Chorus]
You are the lovers rock
The rock that I cling to
You're the one
The one I swim to in a storm
Like a lovers rock
The proximity of this song to “The Rock of Ages” is what helped me come to the realization, I think. It might as well be about the rock of ages. I mean, it is about the rock of ages. There might be a case to be made for Sade referencing that old concept in this song inadvertantly, or explicitly, but that’ almost secondary. The concept of a rock to cling to in the storm is Jesus. To have that concept in your head or in your heart is to have him in your head or in your heart.
The fact that she sings the big part of the Lords Prayer in the song after this lends some credence to what I’m saying for Sade in particular, I think. She knows what’s what, and maybe I do, at least a little bit more now.
