American Jesus Prayer

A very strange song came on to my spotify last night. It was over twenty minutes long and I really took notice at about minute five. I listened to the whole thing, then the album it was one, which is essentially the same song for an additional forty five minutes, with a bit of Tom waits there, at the end. It’s great. Phenomenal. It’s the first song that’s made me think, surely this has got a wikipedia page, and indeed, it did.

The song has only a few lyrics. They were song by a forgotten homeless person in a bad neighborhood in London. They were recorded for a documentary but never included therein. The tape ended up on the cutting floor of one of John Cages students who put it on a loop in his class room / studio. It made people cry.

Jesus’ blood never failed me, yet
never failed me, yet
Jesus’ blood never failed me, yet
this one thing I know
For he loves me so.

Truly I love this song.
I told Abby it reminded me of the Jesus prayer and she agreed. It feels like an English Jesus prayer. The touch of irony at the edge of the first and third sentence. Teh simplicity of the fourth, the earnestness of the fifth. Excellent, just excellent.

I’m having a harder time memorizing it than makes a great deal of sense. But that feels right somehow, too. The whole song’s right. I listened to it while I mowed the lawn. The whole lawn.

Yours &c.          Bozo
