I‘ve had a difficult time writing this blog and going to sleep these last few nights. The first’s tough because I want to keep sewing, and the second’s tough because I want to keep sewing. I have to pull myself away from it for both. I’m doing it now to get it done, so I can get back to sewing.
Last night I wrote the blog and went back to sewing and the next time I looked up at the clock it was half past midnight, which is outrageous. I had to kick myself out of the office and hit the sack then, far too late.
There’s something perfect about the tactility and the timeliness of it. You can measure your progress in square inches, and you can pace your process through lengths of thread. I have about 1,000 pre-cut lengths hanging from a hook 18” from my keyboard. While I think for work, or write, or between walks, or after walks, or before moving stones, or after meetings, I can grab a string and stitch it. Takes about fifteen minutes, it’s perfect.
Just one more string.
It’s obsessive and I have a hard time snapping myself out of it. This jacket will require hundreds of them, many hundreds. If I had to guess, it’ll be about 100 hours, maybe more, to finish this thing. It’ll be quite a treasure. It’ll be a treasure because it’s beautiful, but it’ll be a treasure also because it will mark dozens of late evenings spent in obsessive flow and pleasure.
