William Gibson wrote some place, it might have been his collection of non fiction Distrust That Particular Flavor, that we get too fussed about cybernetics. The difference between hacking into the occular nerve to show data directly to the brain, and projecting it into our occular nerve with electrons from a computer monitor is basically neglible, and one is a hell of a lot cheaper and less traumatic (the one we have now, the second one, the one you’re doing at this very moment by reading this blog.)
What is the difference between a thing inside of our bodies and something outside of our bodies that has the same requirements or effect?
Without Abby’s womb and body baby would die. In a few weeks, without Abby’s boob and warmth, baby would die. Do they really cease to be one organism between now and then?
When do mother and child start to be seperate beings?
Without the plants and animals we eat, we’d die. Does that mean we’re one organism? No, I don’t think so.
In Gibson’s Neuromancer a character suggests that the Japanese Zaibatsu, or mega-corporation is the most successful and largest organism on the planet. I don’t think that’s right, either. I don’t think that about mega corporaitons but the jury’s out on when Abby and baby cease to be two souls of a single eight limbed body.
I’m not certain I have some grand point to be made here. Scratch that, I’m certain that I don’t have some grand point, it’s just curious to think about.
